Banquet in a raised garden bed

In your opinion, how much arable land do you really consume?

In Luxembourg, a resident currently uses almost 4,000 m² of land, much of which is imported. However, if the world’s 1.6 billion hectares of farmland were divided up, each person would have access to 2,000 m². This space would be enough to grow the essentials: bread, potatoes, fruit, vegetables, as well as animal feed for meat, milk and eggs (not forgetting that animal feed is partly derived from arable land), not forgetting tobacco and cotton. This 2,000 m² plot of farmland actually exists, close to the Maison de la Nature in Kockelscheuer, organised by IBLA, natur&ëmwelt and co-labor.

At the LUGA exhibition, this global phenomenon will be reflected on a smaller scale, with raised garden beds featuring a recipe such as Bouneschlupp or a burger to illustrate the resources grown in an urban environment. These local plants and seasonal produce demonstrate that it is possible to integrate food production into cities, contributing to sustainable and accessible agriculture.

IBLA (Institut fir Biologesch Landwirtschaft an Agrarökologie Luxembourg) is the competence centre for research and consultancy in the field of organic farming, organic viticulture and agroecology in Luxembourg. Areas of interest include protecting natural resources (water, soil, climate) and biodiversity, assessing sustainability, preserving and improving soil fertility, variety testing, animal welfare and optimising crop rotation.

For 40 years, co-labor‘s aim has been to help unemployed people reintegrate into professional and social life. Through activities focusing on horticulture and organic food, co-labor aims to preserve and rebuild the environment, which in turn enables people to live and work.

natur&ëmwelt works to safeguard biodiversity in a varied natural and cultural landscape by raising awareness, providing advice and taking practical, scientific and political action at local, national and international level. natur&ëmwelt a.s.b.l. has 12,000 members in member associations and 40 partner associations.

There are 6 different-sized garden beds in corten steel.

Plants include vegetables, fruit (berries) and cereals.
