Through its programme and events, LUGA – Luxembourg Urban Garden is committed to raising public awareness of the issues surrounding food waste by highlighting local, seasonal and/or organic produce, as well as practices to combat food waste. In this context, LUGA is positioning itself as an ‘anti-waste’ event, encouraging not only its participants, but also its partners and service providers to adopt responsible consumption habits, particularly during major events.
The ‘Antigaspi’ awareness campaign, launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture, aims to raise public awareness of the impact of food waste. The main reason for the campaign is that 53% of food waste in Luxembourg comes from private households, while 24% comes from production, 12% from catering and 11% from the commercial sector. Food waste also has major environmental implications: 28% of agricultural land is wasted, not to mention water consumption, which amounts to 250 km³ per year. In addition, 3.3 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases are emitted as a result of the production of food that ends up being wasted.
Despite the ecological dimension, there is also a moral obligation to combat food waste, given that 733 million people suffer from hunger and a third of the world’s food is wasted. It is in this context that the International Day for Food Loss and Waste Awareness is celebrated every 29 September. Established by the United Nations (UN) in 2020, the aim of this initiative is to highlight the global issue of food loss and waste.
