This garden is a contemporary take on the ‘jardin des simples’, also known by its Latin name of Herbularius, which once housed a variety of medicinal, aromatic and condiment plants, whose uses were often combined.
Its layout is inspired by its position at the confluence of the Pétrusse and Alzette rivers. It offers a diversity of spaces, varying in height and exposure, creating ideal conditions for each plant and bringing the vegetation closer to visitors. The traditional elements of the jardin des simples, such as wooden plessis, raised beds and boxwood, have been reinterpreted in a modern way.
The aromatic plants are the heart of this garden. They are grown and selected with passion in Luxembourg by the Kirsch family, market gardeners who have specialised in aromatic herbs for over 40 years. They will be accompanied and enhanced by medicinal, flowering and melliferous plants, making this space a place dedicated to health, biodiversity and education.
The garden has been designed by LUGA in collaboration with the City of Luxembourg’s Parks Department and Mr Kirsch, initiator of the LUGA exhibition in Luxembourg.
