As part of its current exhibition “All You Can Eat”, the Lëtzebuerg City Museum is publishing the first volume of a scientific book on the subject of food in Luxembourg. The 11 contributions by specialists in history, linguistics, agriculture and food security focus on the production and sale of foodstuffs.
Vol 1 – Produce and sell
Luxembourg agriculture and market gardening occupy the first chapter of the book: the deduction of former agricultural activities from the names of localities, the introduction of potatoes in Luxembourg, the evolution of the agricultural school and the market gardening manuals of the early 20th century. The second chapter presents different aspects of food processing: the slaughter of animals in Luxembourg City, the history of Luxembourg’s national brands in the 20th century, the fate of a family bakery in Limpertsberg and food safety legislation. The third and final chapter is devoted to trade: the weekly markets in Luxembourg City, the changes in the food retail trade in the 20th century and the economy of food products from the colonies.
Vol 2 – Eating and Hunger
The first two chapters are devoted to the act of eating, at home, in a restaurant or in the community: tableware, fridges, household food budgets, the evolution of menus in the hotel industry, the culinary offer at the Schueberfouer, food in convents, barracks or prisons. In the third chapter, it is a question of “eating differently”: food in the Middle Ages, vegetarianism, the ecological issues of eating habits, waste, fasting, ritual slaughter, Italian food traditions, American foodstuffs in Luxembourg. The fourth chapter brings together contributions on art and food, while the fifth is dedicated to the absence of food, hunger: famines and food shortages from the 15th to the 18th century, the soup kitchen in the 19th and 20th centuries, food under the German occupation and the links between poverty and malnutrition.
“I see gardens as artworks made of living beings that change with the seasons and the passage of time.”
Marianne Majerus is one of the world’s most renowned garden photographers. Her award-winning work has been widely published and exhibited. In this book, she takes us on a very personal photographic journey through a variety of gardens. Expressive images tell the story of the seasons, of constant growth, transformation, fading, and farewells. They invite us to take a closer look, to grasp the essence of the plants – and to linger in moments that will never return. This book captures the many faces of change. It is also a tribute to those who, together with nature, create these blooming oases and pass on their knowledge from generation to generation. Roots for the future.
