A Sustainable Agriculture in the Making
The Urban Farm project is part of a broader strategy by the Kirchberg Fund for the urban development of the emerging districts Laangfur and Kuebebierg, which aims to create a “city of short distances.”
The Urban Farm, in a provisional stage, will be an integral part of the program of LUGA – Luxembourg Urban Garden 2025, and has made a pioneering arrival on the Kuebebierg site. The Fund has signed an agreement with the company Kuebefarm for the development and operation of the Urban Farm.
In line with a desire to combine innovative and traditional agriculture, the Kuebefarm team aspires to address environmental challenges while maintaining economic viability.
The Urban Farm will focus on producing seasonal food using water-saving practices adapted to the local terrain. Kuebefarm goes beyond simply cultivating land—it also aims to offer a variety of community services, including dining, the sale of local products, gathering spaces, educational activities, and gardening advice in community plots. The ultimate goal is to create a dynamic living space that serves the local community.
This versatility has enabled them to build partnerships with more than 120 restaurants, including 50 listed in the Michelin Guide. Weekly direct deliveries to these establishments highlight Aurel & Axel’s practical commitment to product quality.
Since October 2023, the company has successfully operated a 380 m² hydroponic greenhouse on the roof of the Council for the Economic Development of Construction (CDEC) building in Bettembourg, as part of the European GROOF project aimed at integrating agriculture into urban areas.
Blending traditional approaches such as market gardening and agroforestry with innovative techniques like bioponics—which involves growing plants without soil using an organic and biological nutrient solution—Aurel & Axel aim to provide a wide variety of fruits and vegetables year-round, without generating waste from their farming activities.
The farm’s modular approach, using containers, will allow the creation of a solid core and the ability to adapt the facilities to changing needs as the Plan d’Aménagement Particulier (PAP) for Kuebebierg is developed.
Planned Surface Areas (Phase 1):
Market gardening: 5,000 m²
Existing orchard and new orchard / agroforestry space: 10,000 m²
Modular urban farm space (microgreens / mushrooms and greenhouse, etc.): 2,000 m²
High-stem orchard around the recreational plain: 7,500 m²
The establishment of an Urban Farm, beyond its role in supporting a “short distances” city through local production and sales, will also ensure the continuity of on-site agriculture, the preservation of heritage, and provide education and awareness about where our food comes from.
