To celebrate garden artistry, Gaart an Heem and LUGA warmly invite all residents and businesses of Luxembourg City to take part in the Luxembourg Urban Virgäertchen competition.
Garden competitions have long played a central role in Luxembourg in promoting quality of life, community spirit, and environmental awareness.
Modeled after France’s “Villes et Villages Fleuris,” these contests—still widely organized by Gaart an Heem sections—encourage individuals, families, and communities to creatively and sustainably beautify their gardens.
Open to all gardens facing the street that enhance the cityscape’s charm. Submit photos and a brief description.
Evaluation Criteria: – Integration with surroundings (home and street) – Biodiversity (use of native plants) – Year-round appeal (color, texture, structure) – Eco-friendly practices (composting, no pesticides, water conservation) – Maintenance and appearance
Open to all balconies with creative planting that enrich the urban environment. Submit photos and an optional short description.
Evaluation Criteria: – Overall design (utility, harmony, aesthetics) – Plant diversity (emphasis on native plants) – Visual appeal (from inside and possibly from the street) – Eco-friendly practices (efficient water use, no pesticides) – Space use (tiered, hanging, or smart arrangements)
Open to all tree bed gardens in public or private areas. Submit photos and an optional brief description.
Evaluation Criteria: – Harmony with the tree (root care, suitable plants) – Plant variety (focus on native species) – Visual impact (color, structure creativity) – Sustainability (drought-tolerant plants, mulch) – Cleanliness and care
Winning gardens will be featured in the Gaart an Heem magazine!
Eligibility: Open to residents, businesses, and public institutions in Luxembourg City.
Registration: Via the LUGA website from May 7 to July 31, 2025.
Submission: Via the official form. Up to two photos per garden.
Participants may enter more than one category but only one garden per category.
Groups (families, neighborhoods) are welcome—just name one contact person.
Children under 18 may participate with written parental consent. Names, photos, or images will only be published with guardian approval. Please include the child’s age for proper consent forms and data policies.
Application Period: May 7 to August 18, 2025
Initial Review: A jury from LUGA, the City of Luxembourg (VdL), and Gaart an Heem will select up to five finalists per category based on the evaluation criteria.
Finalists: Their gardens will be professionally photographed on-site.
Winners will be chosen by public voting on LUGA.LU.
Awards Ceremony: Winners will be honored at the LUGA closing event on October 18, 2025.
Winning gardens will be featured in the Gaart an Heem magazine.
