On 14 June 2025, the Grand Duchy celebrated the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Schengen Agreement — a historic milestone that paved the way for the free movement of people across Europe.

The day’s festivities began in Schengen with the inauguration of the European Museum of Schengen, followed by the official presentation of the Prinzessin Marie-Astrid Europa, the boat on which the agreement was originally signed on 14 June 1985. In the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, along with other government officials and numerous national and international guests, the celebrations continued in Luxembourg City with a guided tour of the open-air exhibition LUGA – Luxembourg Urban Garden, led by General Coordinator Ann Muller.

The Schengen Agreement marked the dawn of a new era for Europe: one of free movement without internal border controls. It is in this spirit that LUGA has taken shape and unfolds as an open-air exhibition celebrating European and cross-border cooperation.

Featuring gardens designed by architects from across Europe, LUGA highlights the continent’s rich cultural diversity, embodying the very spirit of exchange and collaboration that unites European nations.
