Voyage au pays des arbres

Journey to the Land of Trees is an adaptation of the eponymous tale by J.M.G. Le Clézio. It tells the story of a little boy who is bored and one day decides to journey to the land of trees.

Because he understands the language of trees, he gradually begins to tame them—by walking slowly and gently whistling a single note. Thus begins a marvellous adventure into the secret world of trees, who move their roots and branches, speak and sing, and dance under the light of the moon. We discover them to be joyful, mischievous, serious, sometimes angry—but always happy to see the little boy again, to play with him and protect him.

Journey to the Land of Trees is, first and foremost, a meeting between the poetry of J.M.G. Le Clézio and solitary walks through the forests of the Vallée d’Aure. It then became an exploration of impressions and sensations—alongside a musician, an actress, and a visual artist—through long forest walks. Eventually, the text was shared with children in theatre, dance, and puppet workshops in France and Benin.

Le Clézio’s writing carries us into a universe of sensations and impressions. His words unfold a poetry of the senses, a music, a rhythm. It becomes an initiatory journey, and little by little, we may come to accept being that little boy—reconnecting with this land of trees, wherever it may be.

Perhaps it is our inner forest that we must learn to rediscover and tame, by whistling ever so softly, a note or two, and listening to the sound of leaves trembling in the wind.
