The Mansfeld Site – A Place Rich in History and Transformation

Located in the heart of the Pfaffenthal district, the Mansfeld site is a unique witness to centuries of change, blending heritage, nature, and horticulture.

During the Renaissance, it became the stage for innovative landscaping projects, including the creation of avant-garde princely gardens and the redesign of the surrounding terrain. Over time, the site went through phases of decline, caused by neglect and conflict, before being repurposed as a utilitarian garden — producing vegetables, fruit, and flowers.

The 17th and especially the 18th centuries saw a wave of modernization, influenced by physiocratic ideas. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the site evolved once more, becoming a place for leisure and small-scale industry, with a beer garden, public baths, and artisanal workshops.

Later left to nature, the site was rediscovered with the launch of archaeological excavations in 2003. Today, it is the focus of ongoing efforts to preserve and showcase its heritage, in connection with the LUGA 2025 project.
