Tiny creatures and big environmental questions will be in the spotlight during these two open-air evenings:
Friday, August 29: Microcosmos: The Grass People
France–Switzerland–Italy, 1996 | Claude Nuridsany & Marie Pérennou | French original version (very few words) | 80′
In a small countryside corner, the sun rises and the immense yet miniature world of insects awakens and comes to life before our eyes. As the camera zooms in on the infinitesimally small, it also reaches for the infinitely large. Insects, filmed in extreme close-up, become gigantic creatures climbing a blade of grass as one might scale a tree. A pebble becomes a boulder for a beetle, and a single drop of rain can trigger a cataclysm. A tiny corner of the countryside reveals a vast kingdom and a whole community of life.
Saturday, August 30: Tomorrow
France, 2015 | Cyril Dion, Mélanie Laurent | French original version with English subtitles | 118′
What if showing solutions and telling stories that inspire hope was the best way to address the ecological, economic, and social crises our societies are facing? After the release of a study predicting the possible extinction of part of humanity by 2100, Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent set off with a team of four to investigate in ten countries. Their goal: to understand what could lead to such a catastrophe—and more importantly, how to avoid it. By connecting positive and concrete initiatives that already work, they begin to piece together what the world of tomorrow could look like.
