The kepenek is a garment worn until the end of the 20th century by shepherds in the mountain plateaus of Anatolia. It takes the form of a large hooded coat made of felted wool, which keeps away the rain and the cold. A Turkish proverb states that ‘everything lies under the kepenek’.
The participative and immersive work conceived by Cengiz Hartlap (b. 1971 in Paris, lives and works in Paris) and Sara Lefebvre (b. 1988 in Paris, lives and works in Paris) invites visitors of all ages to put on this second skin and walk along the LUGA trail. Made by one of the last traditional Anatolian felt makers, their ‘augmented’ kepeneks are equipped with a sound system through which wearers can listen to a fantastical and historical tale around pastoral and agricultural practices in the Pétrusse Valley before its development into a public park in the 19th century.
