Guided Tour of the sound installation The Lower World by Susan Philipsz in the Aquatunnel of Luxembourg City by Sightseeing
As part of the temporary outdoor exhibition LUGA – Luxembourg Urban Garden 2025, Scottish artist Susan Philipsz (born 1965 in Glasgow) has transformed the Aquatunnel of Luxembourg with an original sound installation, created in collaboration with Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean. A specialist in installations that explore the emotional and sculptural dimensions of sound, Philipsz has conceived the immersive work The Lower World specifically for this unique underground space.
Stretching 900 meters, the Aquatunnel connects the Pétrusse Valley to the Pfaffenthal district, passing under the Ville Haute. Originally built for wastewater collection, it was later repurposed for civil protection functions. This unique context inspired the design of the installation, which draws on alert sounds as well as mythological narratives.
