Despite its devastating effects on resources, the environment and the climate, urbanisation is also progressing rapidly in Luxembourg.

Currently, half a hectare of land is urbanised every day in this country, whereas every square metre of developed land counts, not only in the landscapes, but also within the cities and villages.

Open spaces not only play an important role for people’s leisure activities and biodiversity, but in view of increasing strong weather events, they are also crucial for the resilience of urban landscapes.

This lecture will explain the different roles of natural soil and outline how open spaces will characterise cities in the future.
