Milpa, also known as Three Sisters, is a farming method inherited from the people of Central America. It involves sowing three plants together that have beneficial synergies: pumpkin, corn, and beans. Pumpkins have deep roots, drawing nutrients from the depths, and their large leaves protect other plants from weeds and moisture loss.

Beans fix nitrogen from the air with the help of their symbiotic bacteria, rhizobia. Corn serves as a climbing aid for the beans. The flowers and other plants growing in the milpa provide the support team. They attract beneficial animals. The milpa is a beautiful example that illustrates the hidden synergies between plants. It is by working together that we will achieve better yields. Both literally and figuratively.
